Every Democrat on the ballot this November is running on the same word: “affordability.” What they are not running on is the fine print, and a Republican strategist has laid out exactly what it says.
Writing at The Daily Wire, Carly Bird, founder of Bird’s Eye Consulting and former national spokeswoman for Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign, argues the party has read the polls and knows cost of living is the top voter concern. So every candidate promises to “lower costs.” “The truth is Democrats have no plan to lower costs,” Bird writes. “In fact, the Democrat agenda promises the opposite: Expensive, tax-hiking policies that will do anything but make it easier for American families to make ends meet.”
Start with health care. Congressional Democrats recently released their top three proposals if they retake the House, and “Medicare for All” made the list. Bird cites Heritage Foundation estimates putting the price tag at $47 trillion over ten years, with more than 65% of U.S. households ending up worse off and income taxes rising at least 20% for every working American.
Then there is the tax plan Democrats are openly campaigning on. What the party calls “repealing President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill,” Bird notes, is repealing the largest tax cut in American history. Nearly every Democrat candidate has promised to do it. In plain terms, that is a tax hike on working families in every state.
The part they are keeping quiet is energy. Bird calls it “climate hushing,” the new midterm strategy of simply not mentioning the expensive climate agenda until after the votes are counted. “Are we to believe that once Democrats are in power, they will not pursue their beloved, tax-hiking Green New Deal?” she asks. No Democrat will back drilling on federal lands, and the party remains intent on eliminating coal, which she says still generates nearly half of America’s electricity. Less coal means higher electric bills.
Bird also points to New England, which sits next to the Marcellus, North America’s largest natural gas field, yet stays dependent on imported liquefied natural gas from foreign adversaries because pipeline capacity is choked off. Permitting reform, she argues, “will only happen under a Republican-controlled Congress.”
On inflation itself, Bird is blunt about where prices came from: COVID shutdowns that Democrats cheered, followed by trillions of dollars “we did not have” printed and spent through the American Rescue Plan and the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, then the war in Ukraine. Falling inflation and rising wages, both happening now, do not instantly translate into lower prices, and the fix requires a government that spends less, not another round of stimulus checks.
And this is not the Democrat Party of a generation ago. Bird describes a party pulled toward the Democratic Socialists of America and what she calls a “$212 trillion agenda.” Hand that coalition the House, she warns, and the next two years become a parade of impeachment hearings “that do nothing but generate clicks from their basement-dwelling far-Left base on social media — all at the taxpayers’ expense.”
Her advice to voters before November is simple: “Ask each Democrat candidate if raising taxes is a part of their affordability plan to lower costs for families.” Don’t expect a straight answer.
