It is truly nauseating how badly Democrats want Donald Trump to fail. Consider the glee with which they pounced on a preliminary Defense Intelligence Report suggesting that the bombing raids on Iran’s nuclear targets might not have been as devastating as the president first indicated. Never mind the implications for the safety of Israel and indeed the world; never mind that this president had the guts to attempt something that many predecessors had failed to do. The big news was that the intense bombing undertaken Saturday may only have set back the mullahs’ nuclear ambitions by months, not years, as Trump first claimed.
To the doubters, the preliminary and uncertain nature of that report was irrelevant. The New York Times, eager to report that Trump had once again exaggerated his accomplishments, included in their report that no one had yet gained access to the Fordow site; we have no idea what kind of shape it is in.
We will learn more in the weeks and months ahead. But this is inarguable:
- Israel has killed off a large number of the scientists and military officials involved in Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran may have the potential to rebuild their enrichment facilities but it will take a while to recruit the talent to proceed towards a bomb.
- The Arab Gulf countries are delighted to see the U.S. and Israel clobber their arch-enemy. Their comments after the bombing raid were muted; in unison they called for “de-escalation.” They notably did not call to avenge Iran.
- Iran has lost, thanks to Israel’s incredible military prowess, the solid backing of numerous proxies who have killed Americans and Jews for decades. Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis are weakened; that is a good thing. They have also lost Syria, a once-stalwart ally.
- The United States has made it clear that Iran, a theocratic autocracy that chants Death to America and Death to Israel with regularity, will not have a nuclear weapon. Trump wrote on Truth Social, “IRAN WILL NEVER REBUILD THEIR NUCLEAR FACILITIES.” I believe him; if we have to bomb their facilities again, this president will do so.
Meanwhile, there is a ceasefire between Iran and Israel; that is a good thing and the entire world should hope it holds. There is talk that other Arab countries, like Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, might join the Abraham Accords. That also would be a major step towards peace in the region. The Abraham Accords were one of the most significant wins of the first Trump administration, totally upending the long-standing hostilities of the region. The president sees economic gain and commerce as key to peace; he is not wrong.
His critics, and especially the liberal media, will never give President Trump credit for the achievements of his administration. The good news is that the haters at the Times and Bloomberg are increasingly irrelevant. Americans understand that this president is fighting for our country, and they are behind him.
