Liberals and Democratic Socialists of America are putting New York Governor Kathy Hochul under intense scrutiny, as some Democrats start to rally behind Zohran Mamdani’s push for new tax hikes in the state, the New York Post reports. Concerned party members, especially moderates, worry that Hochul’s close association with Mamdani—a self-described socialist and recently elected New York City mayor—could jeopardize Democratic prospects in upcoming elections.

Republican figures, including Rep. Elise Stefanik, have quickly seized on Hochul’s perceived support of Mamdani, warning that her alignment with his progressive platform may alienate centrist voters and bolster GOP efforts statewide. Stefanik and other strategists argue that Democrats risk backlash in competitive districts, especially as Hochul appeared at campaign events for Mamdani and faced pressure from the party’s left wing to endorse him.

Zohran Mamdani’s campaign centered on bold progressive promises such as freezing rents, providing universal childcare, offering free buses, and launching city-run grocery stores—programs he pledged to fund with tax increases targeting the wealthy. However, ultimate decisions about state income and corporate taxes rest with Governor Hochul and state lawmakers, and Hochul has so far signaled reluctance to follow Mamdani’s lead on dramatically raising taxes, despite growing demands from Democratic Socialists.

Hochul’s relationship with Mamdani now presents a political dilemma: supporting him may alienate moderates and risk losing swing voters, while criticism could lead to conflict with the socialists in the party. Already, Republican leaders have used Hochul’s stance in campaign ads, attacking her as weak on public safety and financially irresponsible. Some Democrats fear that if Mamdani’s policies stumble or prove unpopular, Hochul could be held accountable and face greater vulnerability, especially from an energized GOP field.

The final direction of tax policy in New York remains unresolved. While Mamdani pushes for aggressive increases on the wealthy and corporations, Hochul’s administration has stressed caution, noting budget pressures and cuts in federal funding. The outcome may depend on how Mamdani’s tenure as mayor unfolds, and whether Hochul chooses to stand firm or compromise under pressure from her party’s left wing.
