Zohran Mamdani has won the 2025 New York City mayoral election, marking a historic victory as the city’s first Muslim, first socialist, and youngest mayor, the New York Post reports. At 34 years old, Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and ran on a socialist platform focused on affordability, including fare-free city buses, rent freezes on rent-stabilized apartments, expanded affordable housing, a $30 minimum wage by 2030, and city-run grocery stores, an agenda that demands increased taxes on corporations and high earners.

Mamdani cast his ballot on Election Day in Queens with his wife, artist Rama Duwaji. His campaign saw an upset win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who conceded after the primary election, and Republican Curtis Sliwa, who finished at “rock bottom.” Despite criticisms of Mamdani being a communist and questioning his stance on Israel and Hamas, Mamdani’s supporters dismissed these claims as nothing more than Islamophobic and unfounded.

The 2025 mayoral race attracted record voter turnout, with nearly 2 million New Yorkers voting, surpassing the 2021 election numbers. President Donald Trump had urged Republicans to vote for Cuomo to prevent Mamdani’s victory and threatened to cut federal funding to New York City if Mamdani were elected. However, Mamdani vowed to stand firm in his socialist policies.

In addition to the anticipated economic collapse of New York City, critics of Mamdani also pointed out his questionable ties to terror. According to The Post, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim group alleged to have deep terrorist ties, is identified as the largest institutional supporter of Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign in New York City. Documents exposed indicate CAIR’s significant financial and organizational backing for Mamdani, who won the 2025 mayoral election. This connection raises concerns and scrutiny over the affiliations behind Mamdani’s political support.

The Post reports, “lawmakers have called for investigations into CAIR’s alleged terrorist connections. Arkansas senator Tom Cotton and New York Rep Elise Stefanik sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last month, urging the department to investigate CAIR’s alleged links to the Hamas terrorist group.”

“CAIR’s deep ties to terrorist groups…should prevent them from maintaining nonprofit status, Cotton said.

Mamdani’s election signals a shift in New York City politics towards socialism, despite concerns and strong opposition from conservative voices and some Jewish community leaders. Upon taking office on January 1, 2026, Mamdani will resign from his position in the New York State Assembly. His inauguration is anticipated as a brand new chapter for the city.
