Trump Slaps ICC with Sanctions After ‘Illegitimate’ Actions Against U.S. and Israel

The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on four senior members of the International Criminal Court (ICC) due to their involvement in unlawful investigations and actions targeting U.S. and Israeli officials, the Washington Free Beacon reports. This move includes measures against two ICC judges, Kimberly Prost and Nicolas Guillou, as well as deputy prosecutors Nazhat Shameem Khan and Mame Mandiaye Niang, for authorizing or supporting actions against American military personnel and Israeli leaders, including the Israeli Prime Minister and former defense minister.

According to the Free Beacon, “the Trump administration sanctioned four members of [the ICC] on Wednesday over their efforts to ‘investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute nationals of the United States or Israel, without the consent of either nation,’ the State Department confirmed” to the outlet.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the sanctions will freeze any assets these ICC officials hold in the United States and prohibit Americans from doing business with them. Rubio argued that the ICC’s activities pose a national security risk and challenge U.S. sovereignty, characterizing the court’s pursuit of cases against the U.S. and Israel as illegitimate and politically motivated.

“It remains the policy of the United States Government to take whatever actions we deem necessary to protect our troops, our sovereignty, and our allies from the ICC’s illegitimate and baseless actions,” Rubio said. “I urge countries that still support the ICC, many of whose freedom was purchased at the price of great American sacrifices, to resist the claims of this bankrupt institution.”

The Trump administration views the move as a necessary step to defend U.S. and allied interests against what it describes as an overreach by the ICC. The sanctions follow earlier measures against ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan, as well as warnings to U.S. staff at the ICC regarding potential risks if they return home. Recent legislative proposals in the U.S. Congress have sought to further expand punitive measures against the ICC and its officials in response to its actions against Israel. The administration’s actions have received significant backing from Republican lawmakers and notable support among the U.S. public.

According to the Free Beacon, “a January poll found that 42 percent of registered voters strongly supported ICC sanctions, compared with 14 percent who said they strongly oppose them.”

In July, the Trump administration reportedly imposed sanctions on United Nations special rapporteur Francesca Albanese, citing what it called “her illegitimate and shameful efforts to prompt International Criminal Court action against U.S. and Israeli officials, companies, and executives.”

A Senior State Department official told the Free Beacon, “The Trump Administration will not remain on the sidelines as the ICC continues with its politicization and abuse of power, which directly represent a national security threat to the United States.”

“These sanctions are yet another step taken by this administration to hold accountable those individuals who directly support the ICC’s baseless attacks on the sovereignty of the United States and our allies,” the official added.
